WELCOME THE LITTLE CHILDREN: Webinar on 2016 Best Practices for Child Protection in Churches, Schools, & Ministries.
Churches, private schools, and other nonprofits face a host of legal challenges today, but perhaps none is as critical or daunting as the protection of the children they serve. New technologies magnify the reach, temptation, and impact of sexually explicit materials, and ministries often struggle to keep up with these technologies and adequately protect the vulnerable. Past abuse allegations can surface decades after the event and make it difficult for ministries to investigate and respond wisely, doing justice to both those who have been victimized and those whom the ministry exists to serve. Even choosing the best insurance coverage is a challenge because of the real possibility of an enterprising plaintiff’s lawyer finding a new angle on the law. Drawing upon their decades of experience in investigating and prosecuting child abuse cases and in advising ministries on how to prevent and respond to child abuse, attorneys Bob Flores and Scott Ward of Gammon and Grange, P.C. will address all of these cutting edge challenges that churches and ministries face. Topics include: guarding against child protection risks created by social media and other technologies; fully protecting children and other vulnerable persons while effectively ministering to sex offenders; wisely investigating and justly addressing allegations of historic abuse; and, insurance coverage issues.
Scott J. Ward, Owner at Gammon & Grange, P.C. and director of its Religious Liberties practice group, has over 25 years of experience helping nonprofits, ministries, and churches to avoid and manage legal risks and ultimately further their charitable missions. His practice has involved advising ministries on a broad range of child protection issues, including child protection policies, responding to and investigating suspected child abuse, complying with state child abuse reporting laws, interfacing with insurance companies, and defending ministries in litigation.
Bob Flores, Of Counsel at Gammon & Grange, P.C., has more than 30 years of experience investigating, prosecuting, and overseeing national efforts against child sexual abuse and exploitation for the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and the United States Department of Justice. He combines expertise in both criminal law and emerging technologies to deliver novel solutions for child exploitation risks. Mr. Flores’s practice focuses on conducting internal investigations, advising nonprofit organizations, cyber-crime, privacy, and serving as outside counsel to organizations and businesses facing government audits and investigations.
